Community Challenge #8: Meet Two Talented Creators!

For our next Community Challenge we are joined by two talented artists from Spectrum!

They have been a part of the community for a combined 14 years and have filled the studio with so much colourful work! Ben specializes in fantastical animal characters, and Lucas in hilarious animated shorts!

Ben Lachapelle

How long have you been coming to Spectrum Productions?

Let me think, about 5 years!

What films have you made or been a part of?

I’ve made Angry Birds eat Pizza, the All Alone Puppet Show, All about the Snoxea and Snoxea and Friends! In the future I’m making an Animal’s tribute to Beethoven, and the Duck and the Alphabet of Lost Animals.

What’s your favourite part about filmmaking?

To me it’s all about weird creatures, animating, and puppet making!

What was your favourite film you’ve ever made?

It has to be Snoxea & friends, to me it was absolutely perfect!

When did your love for animals start?

When I was a little boy, it grew more and more with every video I watched! I was inspired by a lot of Youtube storytelling animators like Odd Ones Out, Jaiden Animations, and so many more!. I was also addicted to a lot of cartoons like Baby Einstein

What’s your favourite Spectrum memory or moment you were part of?

I loved making stuff at summer camp, and liked being a star in a lot of videos! I also remember one fun thing was making a song made out of animal sounds! I want to release that video soon!

What are you excited to teach people about illustration?

Drawing is so much fun for anyone to do! I was an artist and illustrator of many characters! I’ve taught kids how to make clay sculptures and I’ve taught drawing and puppet show classes online before as well!

What exactly are you gonna teach us for the challenge?

I’m gonna show people how I make cute animals through fast drawings!

Everyone can come along for this adventure with safari animals!

How long have you been coming to Spectrum Productions?

For me it’s been about nine years, it’s been really fun!

What’s your favourite part about animating?

I like three things about animating! First, creating characters with 2d rigs to move them, second figuring out what actions I want them to do, third, finding solutions to all the problems I might run into!

What animated films have you made or been a part of?

I made CFI, Cartoon Industries, a Lucky Toons Spinoff, and a short New Years Video for 2018! I also started the Blobz series three years ago during Creative Media Lab!

What was your favourite thing to make in that project?

It was Blobz def! It was the start of making things that went toward my career and it was really cool! I was able to make five characters of all different shapes and sizes!

When did your love for animation start?

Since I watched the first Walt Disney animated films, like the original Mickey Mouse cartoons, Aristocats on VHS, and LooneyTunes from WarnerBros! Thanks to these inspirations I was able to make my own cartoons based on these four! Watching the behind the scenes segments was super helpful to know where to start on my own creations!

What’s your favourite Spectrum memory or moment you were part of?

I liked the time that I ate Pete’s recipes, and when I could talk with my peers during Summer Camp! I can’t wait to go again!

What are you looking forward to for this Challenge? What do you hope to teach people?

I want to prove to people that they can make animations like I do, and that it’s easier than it looks! I also really appreciate the chance to show my work off to people and get some recognition for it!
