INTRODUCING MICHAEL CAMPISI
Tech Pro, Bird Lover and clever Creative Media Lab Coordinator
Since the fall term has begun, Creative Media Lab is back in full swing at the studio, and this year we've got a brand new format full of interesting modules where participants can develop their skills and discover their potential.
All this new content is created in part by Michael Campisi (he/him), who also goes by Mike. Mike has been a part of the studio for over 10 years, first as a participant, then as a Summer Camp staff, and now as the Creative Media Lab Coordinator! If you need a camera person, computer builder, or have a random tech question, he's the one to go to! He'll come up with a genius solution to any problem and can make anything from visual effects and even fonts. He's known as the local bird at the studio, because of the blue bird avatar he created for himself. I sat down with him and asked him about just how he learned everything he knows and much more!
What were some of the most unique jobs you've done?
My first job was at an Automotive Shop where I'd fill out orders of car parts. Although it was repetitive, I did like cars a lot. More recently I was working as a video game developer for a virtual reality game. I worked on different kinds of functionalities and made some props for their game. I love making video games and have participated in a few Game Jams, both as individual and in a group. I've been able to rank pretty high in a lot of competitions, including my team placing first in 4th edition of the Valleyfield Intercollegiate Video Game Jam in 2020! I make my own games and 3d models like avatars and I'm really proud of what I've been able to do independently.

That's so great to hear about how successful you've been! I wish I knew how to make video games!
I know you've been a part of Spectrum for a long time, how many years has it been now?
I heard of Spectrum over 10 years ago when I came here with my friends Alexis and Lucas. They were participants at the time and I wanted a place to learn filmmaking and animating. I became a participant myself and started making videos about video games, Minecraft in particular. That was back when I was 12 so I've been here for nearly half of my life!

That's incredible actually! Why did you want to get into animating?
Because of one of my favourite movies, Rio; it has been since I was a kid! I watched it over and over again and it's what made me want to learn 3D animation... Also birds.
That's so sweet! What else do you like to do in your free time?
When I'm not at the studio nor working on my projects, I love exercising! I did badminton in college, ride my scooter a lot, and do fitness group sessions in virtual reality. I'm glad I've been able to make that a habit now!

Tech Pro, Bird Lover et intelligent coordinateur du Labo Média Créatif!
Depuis le début du trimestre d’automne, le Labo Média Créatif bat son plein au studio, et cette année, nous avons un tout nouveau format rempli de modules intéressants où les participants peuvent développer leurs compétences et découvrir leur potentiel.
Tout ce nouveau contenu est créé en partie par Michael Campisi (il/lui), qui s’appelle aussi Mike. Mike fait partie du studio depuis plus de 10 ans, d’abord en tant que participant, puis en tant que membre du personnel du camp d’été, et maintenant en tant que coordonnateur du LMC! Si vous avez besoin d’un caméraman, d’un constructeur d’ordinateurs, ou si vous avez une question technique quelconque, c’est à lui qu’il faut s’adresser! Il va trouver une solution de génie à n’importe quel problème et peut faire n’importe quoi tel que des effets visuels et même des polices! Il est connu en tant que l’oiseau local du studio, à cause de son oiseau bleu qu’il a créé comme avatar pour lui-même. Je me suis assis avec lui et lui ai demandé comment il avait appris tout ce qu’il savait et bien plus encore!
Quels ont été certains des emplois les plus uniques que vous avez fait?
Mon premier emploi était dans un atelier automobile où je remplissais des commandes de pièces de voiture. Même si c’était répétitif, j’aimais beaucoup les voitures. Plus récemment, je travaillais comme développeur de jeux vidéo pour un jeu en réalité virtuelle. J'ai travaillé sur différente fonctionnalités et créé quelques objets pour leur jeu. J’adore faire des jeux vidéo et j’ai participé à quelques Game Jams en tant qu’individu et en groupe. J’ai été en mesure de me classer assez haut dans de nombreuses compétitions, y compris mon équipe qui s’est classée première dans la 4e édition du Valleyfield Intercollegiate Video Game Jam en 2020! Je fais mes propres jeux et des modèles 3d comme des avatars et je suis vraiment fier de ce que j’ai pu faire indépendamment.

C’est tellement génial d’entendre à quel point vous avez réussi! J’aimerais savoir comment faire des jeux vidéo!
Je sais que vous faites partie de Spectrum depuis longtemps, depuis combien d’années?
J’ai entendu parler de Spectrum il y a plus de 10 ans quand je suis venu ici avec mes amis Alexis et Lucas. Ils étaient participants à l’époque et je voulais un endroit pour apprendre le cinéma et l’animation. Je suis devenu un participant moi-même et a commencé à faire des vidéos sur les jeux vidéo, Minecraft en particulier. C’était quand j’avais 12 ans donc je suis ici depuis presque la moitié de ma vie

C’est incroyable en fait! Pourquoi vouliez-vous faire de l’animation?
En raison de l’un de mes films préférés, Rio; c’est le cas depuis que je suis enfant! Je l’ai regardé encore et encore et c’est ce qui m’a donné envie d’apprendre l'animation 3D... Aussi en raison des oiseaux!C’est si gentil! Qu’aimez-vous faire d’autre dans votre temps libre ?
Quand je ne suis pas au studio ou en train de travailler sur mes projets, j’adore faire de l’exercice ! J’ai fait du badminton au collège, je conduis beaucoup mon scooter et je fais des sessions d'entraînement en groupe en réalité virtuelle. Je suis heureux d’avoir pu en faire une habitude maintenant!
